In the history of Europe, the Middle Ages or medieval period lasted approximately from 500 AD to 1500, although some prefer other start and end dates. The Middle Ages is the second of the three traditional divisions of Western history: antiquity, medieval, and modern. Major developments include the predominance of agriculture in the economy, the exploitation of the peasantry, slow interregional communication, the importance of personal relationships in power structures, and the weakness of state administration. The period is sometimes subdivided into the Early, High, and Late Middle Ages, and the early medieval period is alternatively referred to as the Dark Ages.

यूरोपीय इतिहस के सन्दर्भ में, 5वीं शताब्दी से लेकर 15वीं शताब्दी की कालावधि कि मध्य युग कहा जाता है। रोमन साम्राज्य के पतन के उपरान्त, पाश्चात्य सभ्यता एक हजार वर्षों के लिये उस युग में प्रविष्ट हुई, जो साधारणतया मध्ययुग के नाम से विख्यात है। ऐतिहासिक रीति से यह कहना कठिन है कि किस किस काल अथवा घटना से इस युग का प्रारम्भ और अन्त होता है। मोटे तौर से मध्ययुग का काल पश्चिमी यूरोप में पाँचवीं शताब्दी के प्रारम्भ से पंद्रहवीं तक कहा जा सकता है।
